Recipe for Hot Butterbeer from Harry Potter

Any recipe for hot butterbeer is a friend of mine! I haven't even had the chance to try the real deal at the Wizarding World, YET. But after falling in love with the frozen butterbeer and regular frosty butterbeer while visiting Universal Studios last summer, I figured I'd love the hot stuff too!

So, after trying half a dozen different recipes, most of them too sweet for my family, we created a great new recipe for hot butterbeer that I think you'll love just as much as we do!

13 Days of Halloween

It's Day 8 of our annual “13 Days of Halloween ideas” with Jordan at Jordan's Easy Entertaining. I’ll be posting new Halloween ideas Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays all month long. This year the theme is MAGICAL BOOKS and I've been sharing tips for a Room on the Broom Halloween party and today is my first of many Harry Potter inspired Halloween ideas.

Simple Hot Butterbeer Ingredients

You may notice the oat milk in the photo. That was a mistake. This is the dairy version but I did also try oat milk, and almond milk and will give you the subs for a dairy free hot butterbeer recipe as well. {We've had our share of butterbeer lately!}

  • Milk of choice
    • My family loved the regular 2% milk version
    • I opted for the oat milk version {I still want to try coconut milk}
    • But the lowest calorie/carb version is the almond milk
  • Butter – or dairy free substitute {there are SO many options now}
    • I used coconut butter with a little extra salt for my dairy free recipe
  • Butterscotch Instant Jello Pudding mix
    • This hot butterbeer recipe with butterscotch pudding is WAY better than butterscotch syrup versions. Mostly because the pudding makes it super creamy as it thickens. Allowing you to use lighter milk fat without sacrificing texture.
  • Spices: Vanilla, Ginger, and Cinnamon
  • Whipped Cream topping – or dairy free substitute
    • I love making coconut whipped cream. You can also stir in a little butterscotch syrup for an extra dose of yum!
  • Butterscotch syrup for topping {Optional – it's sweet enough without it but looks really fun}

All of the other recipes for hot butterbeer we researched call for brown sugar but it's not necessary when using the pudding mix. The drink is perfectly sweet and creamy without it. But if you've got a sweet tooth, you can definitely add some in.

For a Felix Felices “Liquid Luck” version also add:

How to make hot butterbeer? It's a VERY simple recipe to make. Just warm up your milk and stir everything in. The longer you let it simmer the thicker it'll become. If it's too thick for you, simply add a little more milk.

Step 1: Warm your milk and butter until melted. Then add your soda and stir well.

Step 2: Add the pudding mix and whisk to remove any lumps. Once fully incorporated stir in vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger.

Optional Step 3: Felix Felices luck potion – add yellow dye and gold sparkle powder.

Why Try the Felix Felices Potion?

Why not try Felix Felices!? We could all use a little more luck in our lives I think. Although as Ron Weasley proved in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince {6th book} with his incredible quidditch skills, sometimes we make our own luck. And that's just what I decided to do!

We received a set of etched “Felix Felicis – Liquid Luck” mugs for Christmas from a fellow Harry Potter fan and this seemed just the occasion to try them out! The glass etching is so cool I'll definitely have to share a tutorial later on how you can do it too.

Serve Your Hot Butterbeer

Now that the potion is brewed, your recipe for hot butterbeer made, it's time to serve it up and enjoy. Top with whipped cream and butterscotch topping if desired.

Plus – how cool are these mugs!? I really love them. {Thanks Amy!}

Then add a little extra luck with gold sprinkles on top. This Felix Felices would actually be a fabulous St. Patrick's Day drink as well!

Enjoy a Very Lucky Party with your Butterbeer
