MUT 22 - Tips for Madden Ultimate Team Beginners - MUT.GG (2024)

Being new to MUT 22 can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but today's article will give you a few important tips to help put you on the right path starting out. By default, you will begin with The Campaign and you can not deviate from this path until completing the Preseason portion (more on this in the next section). You should continue playing The Campaign because it will help walk newer players through different gameplay mechanics but most importantly, it's how you will unlock your Team Captain!

Once you have unlocked your Captain in Week 3, feel free to move around and play other types of challenges if you wish. You always want to try getting as many Stars as you can on challenges for better rewards. However, it's more important to simply pass a challenge than it is to struggle to get a perfect score. You can always go back later if the challenges aren't limited-time only and try again for the missing Stars.

Below are a few important tips to keep in mind at the beginning of your MUT journey:

Campaign Edition Player

This is where your MUT journey will begin. After completing the Preseason Challenges, you will get to choose a 75 OVR Campaign Edition Player, but be aware that all of these choices are NOT created equally. You will have the opportunity to upgrade your player later to a NAT version of that player's Core Elite item. The Campaign Edition Upgrade Set can be found under "The Campaign" in Sets.

Upgrade your Team Captain

Once you have completed Week 3 Challenges in The Campaign, you will get to select a Team Captain between Lance Alworth, Shaun Alexander, Jack Youngblood, and John Lynch. Regardless of who you select, your Team Captain will come with an 85 OVR rating. You should immediately upgrade your Captain to 89 OVR by locating the item in your binder and navigating to the "Upgrades" tab (see image below). For just 20 total Training Points, you can immediately upgrade your Team Captain and it's well worth the small cost.

Challenges vs. Missions

It's important to understand the difference between Challenges and Missions in MUT. Challenges are solo games/scenarios against the CPU that can offer different rewards, such as players, packs, Coins, XP, etc. You can locate Challenges under the Play tab on the main MUT menu.

Missions are objectives that also offer various rewards and can be completed in different game modes by playing against other players and/or against the CPU. Missions have their own tab on the main MUT menu and are broken up into different program-specific categories. This is a great place to gain extra XP that's needed to increase your MUT Level throughout the Ultimate Season.

If you look under the Team Affinity section of the Missions tab, you will find a list of Objectives. Completing 7 of the available Activities will reward you with 1 NAT Team Builders 1 Player (84 OVR). Activities include things like completing games, getting tackles, sacks, fumbles, etc. This is a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with Missions!

Complete Daily and Weekly Objectives

You can find Daily and Weekly Objectives under "Missions" and then "Ultimate Season". Daily Objectives include winning 2 games, purchasing a pack, and getting 15 first downs. You always want to complete these for the following reasons:

  • Receive a random Coin Quicksell each day worth up to 25k Coins
  • Get one free Strategy Item each day
  • Earn bonus XP and Coins to help increase your MUT Level
  • Needed to complete Daily Objectives Activity to upgrade UC Kam Chancellor

Weekly Objectives can be found in the same place as Daily Objectives but instead of needing to complete every Activity to earn a reward, you will only need to complete 5 Activities to earn a Gridiron Pack and 10,000 XP towards your MUT Level. If you decide to complete the entire list for the week, you will earn an extra 10,000 XP.

Daily Objective - Purchase a Pack

One of your Daily Objectives will be to "Purchase a Pack". Since most Packs that are available to purchase for Coins cost a significant amount, some newer players will skip this easy objective. However, there is a Pack in the Store that only costs 500 Coins called "Get a Player". This Pack easily pays for itself with the XP and eventually the Coin Quicksell you receive for completing your Daily Objectives. Plus, you can always get lucky in the Pack and pull something worth more than 500 Coins!

Exchange your Bronze Players

When you start Ultimate Team, you will get the same basic Bronze starter squad as everyone else. As you play more MUT, these players will slide off your depth chart and sit in your binder collecting dust. Since you can't Quicksell or post these items to the Auction House, you should use them in the Bronze Player Exchange Sets found under "The Campaign" in the Sets menu. You should definitely take advantage of the Power Up Player and Power Up Pass Sets, but whether you prefer NAT Gold players or Coins is up to you with the rest of your Bronze Players. Check out the Sets below:

  • Power Up Player - Exchange 2 of the bronze players from your starter team that you no longer need for a Power Up Player. Power Ups can be upgraded with Training and other versions of the same player.
  • Power Up Pass - Exchange 2 of the bronze players from your starter team that you no longer need for a Power Up Pass. These passes can be used in place of a player item in a Power Up Player's upgrade path.
  • Gold Player - Exchange 8 bronze players from your starter team that you no longer need for a random gold or better player (NAT). You can repeat this set until you've exchanged all your bronze players.
  • 100 Coin Quicksell - If you've completed all the previous sets but you still have some bronze players left over, exchange them here. You will receive a 100-Coin Quicksell for each bronze player.

Exchanging vs. Quickselling Unneeded Silvers/Golds

As you progress in MUT, you will start piling up plenty of Silver and Gold players you don't know what to do with. Since NAT cards Quicksell for a fraction of the normal amount, these items are perfect for Program Exchange Sets. You will get back an item that can usually be sold for Coins, inserted into your lineup, or used in a larger Exchange Set.

Auctionable/Tradable player items that Quicksell for the full amount of Training Points should be Quicksold instead of exchanged since you will get more value from the Training than constantly exchanging for higher tier items.

If you are ever unsure whether it's better to Quicksell for Training or Auction a specific player item for Coins, check out this cool feature we have on every auctionable player item's page in our database that provides our recommendation. This calculation is based on the Training Value for Quickselling and the estimated Sales Price for that particular item. See the image below:

Play the Legends Solo Challenges

Completing Legends Solo Challenges will reward you with Tokens for the Legends Exchange Set, the corresponding player's Power Up item, and Coins, but the most important reason you want to complete these challenges is for the 82-83 OVR NAT Novice Legends! For every 2 Legends Challenges you complete, you can earn the Novice Edition of the player of your choice to help fill out your squad. These can be found under "Missions" and "Legends". At the time of writing this article, there are 10 challenges with 5 different NAT Novice Legend rewards available. Check out the reward options below:

  • 82 Johnny Unitas (QB) or 82 Michael Strahan (LE)
  • 82 DeMarcus Ware (ROLB) or 82 Darrelle Revis (CB)
  • 82 LaDainian Tomlinson (HB) or 82 Bruce Matthews (C)
  • 83 Brandon Marshall (WR) or 83 Ed Reed (SS)
  • 83 Warren Sapp (DT) or 83 Larry Csonka (FB)
