Waarom een iPhone 16 Ultra?
Apple maakt sinds 2022 een duidelijker onderscheidt tussen de standaardmodellen en de Pro-modellen. Zo is er bij de Apple Watch nu een scheiding in drie segmenten te zien: de SE als budgetmodel, het normale model voor de doorsnee klant en het Ultra-model voor de veeleisende gebruiker. Bij de iPhone wil Apple het verschil ook groter maken. Naast de standaard iPhones en de Pro-modellen komt er een nóg hoger niveau, de Ultra.
Deze is bedoeld voor de verwende gebruiker die het allerbeste wil. Het is een strategie die bij Apple goed blijkt te werken: terwijl Apple de iPhones steeds duurder maakt, blijken steeds meer mensen ze te kopen. En ze kiezen daarbij steeds vaker voor de duurdere modellen. Er is daarom een markt voor een toestel dat nóg meer high-end is. Bij de iPhone 16 Ultra weet je meteen: dit is de ultieme iPhone, die maar voor een kleine groep mensen is weggelegd.
De iPhone 16 Ultra zou daarbij de iPhone 15 Pro Max kunnen vervangen, maar het is ook goed mogelijk dat dit nieuwe model naast de bestaande modellen verkocht gaat worden.

Net als voorgaande jaren verwachten we dat de iPhone 16-serie in september verschijnt, zoals gebruikelijk in meerdere varianten. Om extra aandacht aan de introductie van de iPhone 16 Ultra te geven, is het goed mogelijk dat dit model z’n eigen introductiemoment krijgt. Dit gebeurde ook al bij de Apple Watch Ultra, die een week ná van de normale Apple Watch Series 8 op de markt kwam. Daardoor kreeg het horloge tweemaal aandacht.
De aankondiging van alle modellen gebeurt waarschijnlijk wel tegelijk, begin september 2024 tijdens het gebruikelijke iPhone-event.
iPhone 16 Ultra design en scherm
Wat het uiterlijk en het design betreft zouden we bij de iPhone 16 Ultra wel eens iets nieuws kunnen zien. Dat gebeurde ook bij de Apple Watch Ultra en om dit model echt te onderscheiden zou een speciaal design goed passen.
Materiaal van de iPhone 16 Ultra: titanium
Het is vrijwel zeker dat de iPhone 16 Ultra een behuizing krijgt, gemaakt van een titanium-legering. Dit zorgt voor een steviger frame, dat lichter is dan de gebruikelijke stalen rand. Het zal wel betekenen dat het toestel duurder is, maar dat is bij een Ultra-model ook te verwachten.
Voor Apple is de camera altijd een belangrijk onderdeel van de iPhone en elk jaar wordt er ook wel iets gedaan om de kwaliteit van de foto’s nét iets beter te maken. Het is logisch dat de iPhone 16 Ultra daarbij de beste specs krijgt wat de camera betreft.
Ook zijn er geruchten dat je met een toekomstige iPhone 3D-foto’s kunt maken, net als met de Vision Pro-headset. Daarvoor moeten er meerdere camera’s aan de achterzijde aanwezig zijn, die wat verder uit elkaar zijn geplaatst. Bij de iPhone 16 Ultra zou dit gerealiseerd kunnen worden.
iPhone 16 Ultra chip en overige hardware
We kunnen er vanuit gaan dat de iPhone 16 Ultra als high-end toestel de nieuwste en meest krachtige chip krijgt. Dit zou dan de A18 Bionic moeten worden, terwijl de iPhone 16 voorzien wordt van de al eerder verschenen A17 Bionic-chip. Beide zijn gemaakt met een 3 nanometer productieproces, met betere performance en efficiënter energieverbruik. Een eigen 5G-modem zal er nog niet in zitten, aangezien Apple nog voor langere tijd afhankelijk blijft van Qualcomm. Er zijn geruchten dat de eerste 5G-modems van Apple pas in 2025 in een toestel zitten, waarbij de iPhone SE als eerste aan de beurt is.
Wat opslag betreft zou Apple bij de iPhone 16 Ultra een extra stapje omhoog kunnen doen, te beginnen bij 256GB opslag en oplopend naar 2TB.
