Overview
What's New
The 2022 Buick Enclave receives its most significant update since its 2018 debut with new exterior styling at both ends, a new steering wheel, seat designs, and center console layout with a push-button gear shifter, and improved standard technology such as wireless smartphone connectivity, a standard front camera, and front and rear parking assist, although certain features are subject to availability due to the supply chain disruptions that have plagued many other manufacturers as well.
Choosing Your Buick Enclave
The 2022 Buick Enclave luxury SUV is available in three trims, the Essence, Premium, and Avenir and prices range from $43,995 to $56,295.
Engine Choices
The Enclave is fitted with a 3.6-liter V6 that generates 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque at 2,800 rpm and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed through the front wheels or through an optional $2,000 all-wheel-drive system.
The front-wheel-drive Enclave achieves an EPA-estimated 18 miles per gallon city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 combined while the AWD powertrain loses one point across the board.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Enclave is Buick’s largest crossover and is rated for seven passengers with second-row captain's chairs and three seat positions across the third row. The Enclave’s long body stretches to 204.8 inches which is four inches longer than the VW Atlas and eight inches longer than the Honda Pilot.
That length provides for a large interior with 38.3 inches of second-row legroom and 33.5 inches for the rearmost passengers and an impressive 23.6 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row which then grows to 57.7 with the third row folded and 97.4 with both rear rows folded. Only the slightly larger Chevrolet Traverse provides more interior space in this class.
The Enclave is rated to tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds when equipped with the $650 Trailering Package.
Safety Features
The Buick Enclave is standard with automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, a rear cross-traffic alert system that buzzes the left or right side of the driver’s seat (a nice subtle touch), automatic high beams, and front and rear parking assist albeit with limited availability due to parts shortages.
The new $1,450 Technology Package adds an upgraded AEB system, a new rear pedestrian detection system, adaptive cruise control, a digital rearview mirror, and a high-definition surround-view camera. In the Premier trim, those features are standard except for the enhanced AEB and adaptive cruise control which are tied to the $1,995 Adaptive Cruise and Wheel Package. They are standard on the Avenir trim which also now receives rain-sensing wipers.
The Enclave earns Good crashworthiness scores and a Superior rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention from IIHS and has not yet been rated by NHTSA.
Connectivity
The base Enclave features an eight-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, SiriusXM with 360L, a Wi-Fi hotspot while six USB ports (two per row) and a wireless phone charger keep the devices from running empty.
The Premium trim adds navigation, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and a 120V outlet. Those features can be had on the Essence through the Sounds and Sights Package ($1,555) which also requires the Technology Package.
2022 Buick Enclave Essence - MSRP From $43,995
The starting trim features LED headlights and daytime running lights, restyled 18-inch wheels, chrome body side molding inserts, window surrounds, and roof rails, body-color door handles with chrome inserts, dual exhaust outlets, a hands-free power tailgate with an LED projection to indicate where to kick, body-color heated mirrors with driver’s side auto-dimming glass and integrated turn signals, remote engine start, and proximity entry.
Inside, the Essence is equipped with perforated leather seats with heating for the front row, eight-way power-adjustability for the driver, and six-way power-adjustability for the passenger, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 4.2-inch driver information display, and a tri-zone climate control system.
A new Sport Touring Package is available for $1,695 and features a blacked-out mesh grille with body-color surround, gloss black lower front bumper trim, and 20-inch wheels with graphite-painted pockets.
2022 Buick Enclave Premier - MSRP From $52,995
The mid-level Premier trim gains an eight-inch digital gauge cluster, a head-up display (new for 2022), a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, driver’s position memory, ventilated front seats with power lumbar and massage, heated second-row seats, a power-folding third-row seatback, and newly standard power-folding mirrors.
2022 Buick Enclave Avenir - MSRP From $56,295
The top-tier trim separates itself from the rest of the lineup with a unique grille, body-color lower front and rear bumper trim and side sills, clear LED taillights, restyled 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a dual-pane moonroof, and unique interior trim surfacing and seat stitching pattern.
The top-tier trim offers the Avenir Technology Package for $1,595 which includes active suspension and upgraded LED headlights.

CarsDirect Tip
The Premier trim adds additional safety equipment, audio performance, and creature comforts that help separate it from the more mainstream crossovers.

Our expert ratings are based on seven comprehensive criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value.
You can interpret our ratings in the following way:
: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.
: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.
: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.
: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.
: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

Spacious and upscale interior. The Buick Enclave is one of the longest crossover utility vehicles in its class, measuring 204.3 inches from bumper to bumper. That translates into superior passenger-carrying space for seven along with ample cargo room.
This model seats seven with captain’s chairs in the second row and a bench seat in the third row. The second-row chairs nearly match the first row in terms of comfort and come with nearly 39 inches of legroom. The only “miss” here is an optional bench seat, which would give the Enclave room for eight, such as found in the competing Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Palisade.
The cabin is dressed in premium materials and especially so for the range-topping Avenir. The power-controlled front seats offer heating and available ventilating and massaging functions. If you fold down the second- and third-row seats, the Enclave offers just under 100 cubic feet of storage capacity, making this model almost as versatile as a minivan.
Performance, efficiency, and towing. Buick outfits the 2022 Enclave with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that develops 310 horsepower. It is the same engine found in some Cadillac models. That said, this SUV isn’t especially fast as it weighs just over two tons. This SUV is built for comfort with its soft and compliant suspension. We laud it for its responsive steering, which is especially welcome at highway speeds.
The Enclave utilizes a 9-speed automatic transmission to send power to the front or to all four wheels. It averages a combined 20/21 mpg and that’s on the low side for this segment. The Enclave pulls a robust 5,000 pounds when equipped with the optional towing package, which is average for the segment, but just behind the 6,000-pound rating for the Nissan Pathfinder.
Comfort and premium features. It costs about $42,000 to get behind the wheel of a base Buick Enclave, a price that reflects this model’s premium status. A fully loaded Avenir trim with all-wheel drive pushes $60,000, and that’s within the range of the Acura MDX.
Nevertheless, Buick equips the Enclave with a long list of comfort and tech features, including an 8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, and Siri Eyes Free. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, six USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are standard. A 6-speaker audio package is included. Wireless phone charging, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are among the options.
Heated front seats, as well as power-controlled driver and front passenger seats, are included. Leather touches, three-zone climate control, and heated side mirrors come standard. The options list includes full leather seats, 20-inch wheels, and a panoramic sunroof.
Standard and available safety tech. Along with a refreshed design, the 2022 Enclave gains expanded driver-assist safety equipment. Buick includes automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and blind-spot monitoring. Automatic high beams and rear parking sensors are also standard.
Among the safety options are adaptive cruise control, rear pedestrian alert, a head-up display, and a color head-up display. Front parking assist is available. Enhanced automatic emergency braking comes with the Avenir.
Final thoughts. The 2022 Buick Enclave has superior seating and enough cargo room, with just about 100 cubic feet of storage – so it's built for comfort and long trips, but not for speed. It's stylish, but we do wish for more color options with the base model. The fuel efficiency isn't great, either, at roughly 20/21 mpg, and lacks hybrid/EV options. The Toyota Highlander has a combined 36 mpg for comparison. The Enclave's tech and infotainment features are pretty well-stocked, though.
